Building The Barn School
A practical path from vision to a sustainable community resource.
Barn School is being designed to grow intentionally—building the herd, partnerships, team, and programs needed to expand access while protecting the wellbeing of the horses and the long-term health of the organization.
A Home for The Program
Rather than taking on the cost of building an equestrian facility from the ground up, Barn School plans to operate through an established farm partnership with the infrastructure needed to safely care for horses and welcome participants.
This approach allows early investment to go directly toward horses, people, programming, and access, while making use of existing equestrian resources. It also gives Barn School the flexibility to establish its programs, understand community demand, and strengthen its financial foundation before taking on the significant cost of permanent property.
Start with the right environment.
Build the Founding Herd
Barn School plans to establish a founding herd of six horses and ponies selected around the needs of the programs they will serve. Each horse will receive an appropriate veterinary evaluation and a period of professional assessment and training before entering regular programming.
The herd will be intentionally diverse in size, experience, temperament, and strengths so that participants can be matched thoughtfully with suitable horses. Capacity will be built around the horses—not the other way around—with rest, conditioning, health, individual workload, and long-term wellbeing guiding how and when each horse participates.
Six horses. Different strengths. One carefully balanced herd.
Build the Team
The initial team brings together program leadership, instruction, daily horse care, participant coordination, administration, communications, and marketing, with accounting and legal support available as needed. Together, these roles provide the structure required to operate safely and consistently.
As programming grows, seasonal staff and paid working-student positions will add capacity during camps and larger experiences. These roles do more than meet staffing needs—they create opportunities for young people to develop practical skills, responsibility, leadership, and pathways into paid equine work.
Create the people infrastructure alongside the horse infrastructure.
Launch in Layers
Barn School will expand in layers, giving each program the time, attention, and resources needed to become strong and sustainable. As new offerings are introduced, we will actively build awareness, develop partnerships, reach new audiences, and work to make each pathway outlined in our Programs successful and well known.
Growth will be both responsive and proactive. We will listen to what the community needs while also reaching beyond those already seeking us out—finding the schools, families, organizations, visitors, and individuals who may not yet know these opportunities are available to them. Each layer will be strengthened before the next is added, allowing Barn School to grow without compromising program quality or horse welfare.
Build intentionally. Grow each program with purpose.
Build a Sustainable model
Lessons, camps, leases, trail experiences, private groups, corporate experiences, and other fee-based programs generate income that contributes to horse care, staffing, facility expenses, and everyday operations.
Donations, grants, sponsorships, and partnerships can then do something different: expand access. They can support scholarships, subsidized community programming, school partnerships, workforce opportunities, and future growth.
Barn School is also designed to strengthen the community around it. Through tourism partnerships, local collaborations, referrals, and shared experiences, we can bring visitors and spending to nearby businesses while building deeper connections between the barn and the people, organizations, and businesses around us.
The long-term goal is a financially resilient organization where earned income supports the foundation, philanthropy helps more people come through the door, and Barn School contributes to the vitality of the wider community.
Earned revenue keeps The Barn School healthy. Philanthropy opens doors wider.
